Detailed Services Description

Precious Wall Finishes is a specialist heritage painting and gilding practice dedicated to the conservation, restoration and creation of historically appropriate painted and gilded surfaces.

The practice is led by Krissie Mayne, who holds a German Master qualification in Church Painting, Historical Painting Techniques, Gilding and Heritage Conservation from the Master School for Church Painters and Gilders in Munich. She also holds a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating and a NSW Painting Contractor Licence and is a member of Australia ICOMOS and the Society of Gilders.

Heritage painting services include conservation-sensitive surface preparation; practical assessment of existing coatings; specialist colour matching; lead-safe paint removal; and the application of traditional and compatible paint systems. These include limewash, mineral-silicate paint, casein, distemper, linseed-oil paint and earth and mineral pigments. Particular attention is given to breathability, substrate compatibility and the retention of significant original fabric.

Precious Wall Finishes also provides highly specialised architectural, decorative and frame gilding. Capabilities include traditional water and oil gilding with genuine gold, silver, palladium and other metal leaf; verre églomisé; gilded lettering and signage; and gilding on suitably prepared timber, plaster, composition ornament, metal, glass and masonry. Historic gilded surfaces can be consolidated, repaired and sensitively reinstated, including gesso, bole and composition ornament, hand punching, sgraffito, pastiglia, gesso carving, burnishing, toning and ageing.

Additional decorative and artistic services include egg tempera painting, murals, traditional signwriting, decorative paintwork, wood and marble imitation, and bespoke artworks created using historic European techniques.

Every project begins with an understanding of the place or object, its materials, condition and heritage significance. Treatment decisions are guided by compatible materials, minimal intervention and the preservation of historic evidence. Where scientific analysis or another conservation discipline is required, Precious Wall Finishes works collaboratively with the appropriate conservator, heritage consultant or specialist.

Services are available to government agencies, heritage architects and consultants, conservators, museums, churches, builders, institutions and private custodians of historic places and objects. Precious Wall Finishes undertakes projects throughout Australia including regional and remote locations, and travels interstate for specialist commissions.

Krissie welcomes early involvement in a project, from initial site inspection, material advice, trials and methodology development through to careful execution and documentation of the completed work.
