The Australian Heritage Services Directory is live at www.heritagelist.online.
The Australian Heritage Services Directory (AHSD) is a new listing service designed to provide an equitable platform for heritage service providers, consultants, organisations, and businesses to share information with the public across Australia. It is open to anyone within the field or discipline of heritage, including Built Heritage, Aboriginal cultural heritage, Archaeology, Interpretation, Conservation, and more. It also provides links to other government and non-government sites that advocate for all aspects of heritage.
The site currently features 46 categories for listings, with the option to add more as required to meet the needs of the heritage industry. Listers can provide a detailed description of their services, a logo or image, and social, phone, email, and website information, which is available to the public to review, search, and contact providers directly.
The Historic Houses Association, representing the interests of historic homes and their allies, has voiced its support for the AHSD, stating that its “work is continually evolving to meet the needs of heritage custodians and supporters, and we welcome any initiatives towards the promotion of Australian built heritage.”
Founder Kylie Christian is a heritage practitioner with over 25 years of service to the Australian market. She took on the challenge of creating the AHSD in January 2025, after recognising the need for an up-to-date directory of heritage practitioners and services. After some investigation, Kylie discovered that several of these directories had ceased operation over the past few years. She saw a gap in the marketplace for a centralised list of heritage professionals and tradespeople who are working across Australia.
“Heritage in Australia is always facing pressures, from funding issues to training and support, to access to practitioners by the owners and managers who need them. Hopefully, by providing a centralised space that considers the needs of the public, we can advocate and promote all aspects of heritage for the better,” Kylie stated during a recent interview.
The AHSD differs from the former listings as it is a paid service. The nominal listing fee of $22.00, inclusive of GST, was determined to ensure the list remains current and is self-sustaining moving forward. The small annual fee will make the service viable for years to come, providing an affordable and effective option for all to participate in. All hours spent building and launching the website to date have been donated, and moving forward, volunteers will be welcomed to help promote this invaluable heritage industry service. By the industry, for the industry.
