A century in review: the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1926

20 July @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm AEST

Overview

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed between 1921 and 1932. This centenary session focuses on a pivotal year in its delivery, highlighting the completion of the Milsons Point workshops, the arrival of the first steel shipments, the commencement of fabrication, and the initial erection of approach trusses. Together, these milestones provide insight into how complex infrastructure projects were executed a century ago.

Central to this progress was a carefully coordinated steel supply chain extending from England and Newcastle, through the workshops and across a one-kilometre waterfront site divided by a deep harbour channel. Equally important was the long-term planning undertaken years in advance to accommodate later construction stages with significant lead times. Participants will gain an appreciation of how core engineering principles, such as logistics, sequencing, foresight and disciplined project management, remain constant, even as modern tools and equipment have evolved.

Learning outcomes

In this presentation, you will:

  • identify the key logistical and construction challenges faced in 1926 and relate them to contemporary infrastructure delivery
  • analyse how long-lead procurement and staging decisions influenced downstream construction efficiency
  • apply historical lessons in supply chain coordination and site planning to current major project environments
  • reflect on enduring engineering principles and distinguish between technological change and foundational project management practice.
