Aspire Stone Masonry is a Sydney-based specialist stonemasonry business providing traditional craftsmanship, conservation and repair services for heritage buildings, churches, monuments, memorials and architecturally significant properties throughout Sydney, Canberra and regional New South Wales.
Led by experienced heritage stonemason David Jakovich, Aspire Stone Masonry works with architects, heritage consultants, engineers, builders, government authorities, councils, strata managers, churches and private property owners. Every project is approached with careful consideration of the building’s cultural significance, original materials, construction methods and existing condition.
Our conservation approach is guided by recognised heritage principles, including retaining and repairing significant original fabric wherever practicable. Replacement is generally recommended only where stone has deteriorated beyond effective repair or where structural stability, public safety or weather protection requires intervention.
Our heritage stonemasonry services include:
- Inspection and assessment of deteriorated sandstone and masonry;
- Conservation and repair of heritage façades;
- Traditional lime-mortar pointing and repointing;
- Careful removal of hard, incompatible cement pointing;
- Mortar patch repairs to weathered, salt-affected and damaged stone;
- Stone indenting and selective replacement of deteriorated masonry;
- Replication of original sandstone elements and architectural details;
- Hand carving, dressing, profiling and finishing of natural stone;
- Repair and replacement of copings, balustrades, cornices and parapets;
- Conservation of chimneys, pediments, porticos and entrance surrounds;
- Repair and replacement of sandstone steps, thresholds, sills and treads;
- Conservation of churches, crosses, monuments and war memorials;
- Dismantling, numbering, storage and accurate reconstruction of stonework;
- Stainless-steel pinning, dowelling and installation of concealed armatures;
- Crack repair and stabilisation of damaged stone elements;
- Sympathetic cleaning using low-pressure water and non-abrasive methods;
- Application of appropriate biocide treatments;
- Repairs associated with salt deterioration and moisture-related damage;
- Investigation and improvement of water-shedding and water-egress details;
- Stone matching, sampling and selection of compatible replacement materials;
- Preparation of conservation methodologies, scopes of work and maintenance recommendations; and
- Coordination of scaffolding, elevated work platforms, site access and public-safety requirements.
Aspire Stone Masonry has practical experience working with Sydney sandstone and other natural building stones. Considerable care is taken when selecting replacement stone, lime mortar, aggregates, pigments, repair mortars, fixings and finishes to ensure compatibility with the existing masonry.
Traditional hand tools and controlled conservation methods are used wherever appropriate to minimise vibration, avoid unnecessary damage and preserve surrounding original fabric. Mortar colours, joint profiles, stone finishes and tooling are matched as closely as practicable to the original work and the established character of the building.
Our project experience includes heritage churches, sandstone façades, war memorials, monuments, chimneys, balustrades, copings, pediments, porticos, plaques, carved crosses, window and door surrounds, sandstone paving and architectural elements. Relevant projects include All Saints’ Church in Woollahra, Lakemba War Memorial, heritage façade conservation in Darlinghurst, the Parramatta Clock project and conservation work associated with the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
We can assist from the initial site inspection and condition assessment through to methodology development, quotation, material selection, fabrication, installation and final completion. Project documentation can include detailed scopes of work, conservation methodologies, work programs, Safe Work Method Statements, risk assessments, licences, insurance certificates and photographic records.
Aspire Stone Masonry is committed to delivering durable, sympathetic and visually appropriate conservation outcomes while maintaining a high standard of traditional craftsmanship. We welcome enquiries from heritage professionals, government agencies, builders, property managers, churches and owners seeking an experienced stonemason for the conservation, repair or replication of historic stonework.
